We spend our lives accumulating "stuff." The house, the car, the knickknacks and jewelry. We're proud of our stuff, in general, and hoard it like little pack-rats. We measure success in worldly terms by how much stuff we have, both in our homes and stashed away in banks. Stuff can rule our lives.
And then a disaster hits. A fire. A car wreck. Cancer. A hurricane, tornado or super storm. And we see what "stuff" is really worth. Nothing compared to the people we love and cherish. Nothing compared to health. Nothing compared to being alive.
"Stuff" is nice. But keep it in perspective. It is only relationships that will matter in the end. Your relationship with God, on which eternity depends. Your relationship with the family He entrusted you with. Your relationships with friends and community. Your relationship towards the "least of these."
Keep focused on what is important, and don't let stuff takes your eyes off of God, or the people around you.
God's grace be with you,
Fr. Charles Butler
